Inaugurated the exhibition "Mission: Atalanta", in the House of Cayitas, work carried out by the Armed Forces since 2009 in the fight to eradicate piracy in the waters of the Indian Ocean (08/05/2017)

With thirty-seven images and six infographies selected from the book of the same title

In the morning of today the Mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaquín Buendía and the Delegate of Defense in the Region of Murcia, Captain of Ship, Jose Ignacio Martí Scharfhausen, have inaugurated in the Historical Historical Archive, the House of Cayitas, the exhibition "Mission : Atalanta ", organized by the Technical General Secretariat of the Ministry of Defense, through the General Subdirectorate of Publications and Cultural Heritage.

The same offers us a set of thirty-seven images and six infographies selected from the book of the same title edited by this Subdirección in the year 2013 and that will be open until May 27, from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hours, Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

In this opening were also present the colonel chief of the Alcantarilla Air Base and director of the Military School of Parachuting "Méndez Parada", the Councilor for Culture, Tourism and Festivities, María Luisa Martínez León, along with other members of the Civil Corporation , Representatives of associations and groups of our municipality.

Following the words of the Defense Delegate and the Mayor, the Captain de Navío, head of the Cotraminas Unit in Cartagena, Antonio Azpetia, gave a lecture on the work carried out by this Operation Atalanta as a participant in it.

As well as a later guided tour and illustrating on each and every one of the photographs that compose the exhibition, he took it as the Ensign of Navío, with destination in the Naval Museum of Cartagena, Jorge Bañón.

The exhibition "Mission: Atalanta" shows the work done by the Armed Forces since 2009 in the fight to eradicate piracy in the Indian waters.

Thanks to their testimonies, this exhibition tells of the effort and sacrifice of the 5,000 soldiers of the Navy who since that time have formed the endowments of warships and crews of on-board helicopters that have been relieved, as well as of the Army personnel Of the Air deployed in the "Orion detachment" in Djibouti, and the Army in the EUTM Somalia mission to instruct the Somali army.

Operation Atalanta was both the first naval action of the European Union in the framework of the Common Security and Defense Policy which was launched in December 2008 as the first specific military mission to combat piracy, although Spain had promoted Before the creation of a mechanism of coordination of military means to combat the attacks at sea with the operation "Indian Sentinel".

The writing of the book "Mission: Atalanta" was made possible by the testimonies on the ground of the military who have described the details of their work to the other end of the world.

The photographs show the daily task of our troops with the mission of eradicating piracy, making the waters of the Indian Ocean safer and allowing the humanitarian assistance of the United Nations World Food Program to reach the Somali people.

Currently the maritime action vessel (BAM) "Tornado" is deployed, with an onboard air unit SH 60B.

For its part, the ORION detachment operates a P-3M Orion marine patrol aircraft, with about 55 military personnel.

Occasionally the P-3M is relieved by a D-4 VIGMA (marine surveillance version of the CN-235) counting among its troops 56 soldiers.
