[We are Region adhere to the complaint of the Legacy Association on the works that are being undertaken in Villa Romana del Potrofo (24/01/2021)

| As it lacks any protection from local and regional administrations | The local group of Alcantarilla de Somos Región, Somos Alcantarilla, and the cultural commission, Somos Cultura, denounce the realization of works on the land on which the Villa Romana de Potrofo is located, and request its declaration as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Thanks to the Cultural Association "Legado" of Alcantarilla, we have learned that works are being carried out on the remains of a Roman villa, called "Potrofo", located next to the Polígono El Potrox. This town was discovered in the 1980s by the archaeologist Daniel Serrano Várez, based on ancient writings, such as those made by Canon Lozano or González Simancas, which indicated the appearance in the area of ??complete Roman amphoras and a fragment of a tombstone.

, shows a great Roman presence in the area, probably a large villa. In the archaeological campaign carried out by this archaeologist, Roman and Iberian ceramic fragments were found.

Located near the "Rambla del Potrofo", he baptized the site with the same name. Next to this site, Daniel Serrano found a second, at the entrance of Javalí Nuevo, with ceramic remains and a coin dating from the 1st century AD The appearance of these two nearby sites and dating from the same time leads to think that it is the same, therefore, we would be facing a large Roman villa. The remains found in the archaeological campaigns are currently deposited in the Regional Archaeological Museum. At the moment, we find that works are being carried out on where the remains of this 2,000-year-old complex are located, a group that does not have any type of protection. Given this, we cannot if not show our total rejection. We demand that the Alcantarilla City Council and the Ministry of Culture stop the works immediately, protect the area, and make an excavation to discover the secrets that this Roman building keeps that is part of the past of Alcantarilla, in order to condition it as a tourist attraction so that the sewers enjoy your story. We consider that the ideal, given the findings found, the age, and the dimensions, is the declaration of the site as a Site of Cultural Interest, a figure that would protect this place from any act that threatens it. At Somos Alcantarilla and Somos Cultura we have a strong commitment to our heritage, which is part of us, our history and our past, our identity as a society and which shows us where we come from, essential to know where we are going. We attach to the press release images published by the "Legado" Cultural Association about the current state of the site and the findings that were discovered in the 80s.
