Culture confirms the damage reported by HUERMUR in the Arcos de Alcantarilla Aqueduct (11/05/2020)

| Orders its repair and the drafting of an annual maintenance protocol | The conservationist association denounced in July 2019 that the BIC monument, through which three ditches cross the Rambla de las Zorreras, was full of graffiti, brush and lazinessThe Director General of Cultural Property has notified its resolution, which includes "the restitution of the property (...) to a state of conservation that guarantees its integrity" due to its "poor condition"HUERMUR welcomes the fact that it has achieved what it has been requiring for several years, which is that the owners and managers of the aqueduct are obliged to prepare "a Protocol (...) on an annual basis, which guarantees the maintenance of the BIC in good condition"The association, which in 2011 achieved protection as a Property of Cultural Interest, in the Monument category, of this aqueduct, has been denouncing the neglect and neglect of this unique element of the hydraulic heritage of the Huerta de Murcia for 10 yearsThe Association for the Conservation of the Orchard and the Heritage of Murcia (HUERMUR) has received the Resolution of the General Director of Cultural Assets of the CARM in which it imposes the measures of "restitution of the property" after the denunciations for the state of abandonment, neglect and presence of weeds and graffiti in the Aqueduct of Los Arcos de Alcantarilla. This monument, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2011, at the request of HUERMUR, is a unique element of the hydraulic heritage of the Huerta de Murcia, and it is crossed by three ditches the unevenness of the Rambla de las Zorreras, in Alcantarilla.Last July 2019, a team from the HUERMUR association appeared in the aqueduct, once again verifying the abundant accumulation of weeds in the monument, the lack of cleaning and maintenance of the BIC, and the repeated carrying out of graffiti and graffiti on the walls of the aqueduct.

The HUERMUR team verified that these damages occurred both in the upper part of the property, which does not have any signs or protective measures, or in the centuries-old lower arches, made up of three attached aqueducts, through which the Alquibla ditches cross, Turbedal and Dava, being this construction one of the oldest preserved in the entire hydraulic network of the traditional irrigation of the Huerta de Murcia.HUERMUR recalls that, after its complaint in July 2019, the General Directorate of Cultural Property had to rectify its first announcement, since in just 48 hours it had to deny itself and went from indicating that the monument had been restored a year earlier and it was not his competence, but that of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, to confirm that he was going to carry out the inspection that was required in the HUERMUR complaint and send his technicians to check the advanced state of degradation, dirt and abandonment of the monument of Sewer. The resolution of the Director General, which in its four pages recognizes the "poor state of conservation of the property", lists the actions to be carried out, among which are:Cleaning and replacement of the coatings.Cleaning of vegetation, as well as debris, brush and debris in the environment of the aqueduct.Graffiti removal.Treatment of efflorescence.Crack stitching.Treatment of the aqueduct board to avoid structural pathologies and maintain safety conditions.Likewise, HUERMUR congratulates itself for achieving a repeated request that has been made since the protection of the BIC as a monument, which is the order to carry out an "Annual Maintenance Protocol", indicating in the Resolution that "conservation and maintenance measures must be adopted at short, medium and long term that guarantee the preservation of the Aqueduct of Los Arcos ".Finally, from the association it is expected that future resolutions such as this, which should fall on numerous files throughout the Huerta de Murcia, will not be delayed for almost a year, advancing the degradation of the monuments, but rather speed up the processing and inspection of protected assets, equipping the Historical Heritage Service of the Ministry of Education and Culture with the necessary professional and human resources, so that they can fulfill their competences.
