The Alcantarilla City Council, the Brotherhood of the Virgen de la Salud and the Federation of Peñas Festeras y Culturales have decided, after a meeting held by videoconference this morning, to transfer the May Festivities to October, as announced by the Mayor of Alcantarilla , Joaquín Buendía.
The mayor explained that "due to the Covid-19 pandemic that we are experiencing, analyzing the situation during the state of alarm, and after pondering it a lot, we have decided together with the Big Brother of the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Health, Diego Guzmán, and the President of the Federation of Peñas Festeras, Juan Sornichero, that the most sensible thing is for the festivities to be postponed. "
Buendía indicated that "undoubtedly, after the state of alarm has been overcome, it will be up to all of us during the weeks and months that follow to make a great effort to return to normality, that is why we have agreed that the May Holidays be held from October 2 to 11 ".
In addition, the City Council will process the change of the local holiday from May 29 to October 9.
It is the first time in the history of the festivals that they have to be moved on the date, and this first time is due to a health pandemic.
On May 13, 2011, all the events scheduled for the big day of the festivities were suspended in solidarity with the victims of the Lorca earthquake, which had happened on May 11, 2011. In addition, some year some event had to be suspended by rains but all the parties have never been postponed.
