The Obra Social "la Caixa" and the Town Hall of Alcantarilla reinforce their alliance to fight against child poverty (15/11/2018)

CaixaProinfancia is the program that serves families of children between 0 and 18 years of age in vulnerable situations.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, 346 boys and girls and 214 Sewer families were accompanied.

The objective of the program is to break the cycle of poverty that is transmitted from parents to children and offer the youngest opportunities for the future, favoring the development of the skills of children and their families to ensure their full inclusion in society.

Gerardo Cuartero, the deputy director general of the "la Caixa" Banking Foundation, Marc Simón, the mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaquín Buendía Gómez, and the commercial director of CaixaBank in the Region of Murcia, today presented the agreement to strengthen the fight against child poverty through the CaixaProinfancia Program.

The social action jointly carried out by the Obra Social "la Caixa" and the Sewer City Council has allowed the support of 346 boys and girls and 214 families during the 2017-2018 academic year.

In this interval, more than 500,000 thousand euros have been allocated to the development of the program in the territory.

CaixaProinfancia works to ensure that children between 0 and 18 years of age living in poverty or social exclusion have the same opportunities as other children.

The objective of the program is to break the cycle of poverty that is transmitted from parents and children and promote actions focused on social and educational development, both the smallest and their families, through different initiatives:

- Educational reinforcement: attention in speech therapy, psychomotor, assisted study groups, individual reinforcement, school equipment and open classroom.

- Non-formal education and free time: summer camps and activities and open centers.

- Family educational support: family educational workshops and maternity center.

- Psychosocial care and therapy: personalized or with families and group therapeutic workshops.

- Promotion of health: food and hygiene for children, glasses and hearing aids.

10 years working to break the cycle of child poverty

In Murcia, CaixaProinfancia has been operating for 10 years, in which it has provided support until 2017 to 17,364 minors and 9,561 families.

During this time, Obra Social "la Caixa" has allocated a budget of 36 million euros to the development of the program throughout the province.

In 2017 alone, 4.6 million euros were allocated.

Throughout Spain, CaixaProinfancia has treated 282,991 minors and 165,107 families living in poverty during these ten years.

Social action in network

CaixaProinfancia has the collaboration of 426 social entities that work in a network and that are in charge of directly attending families, prioritizing aid and monitoring each case.

In the Murcia region, the program has 10 collaborating entities coordinated by CEPAIM, Cáritas and Fundación Secretariado Gitano.

CaixaProinfancia not only enhances networking among social entities.

The project also promotes a coordinated action with other agents of the territory (town halls, schools and health centers, among others) to give a global and integral response to the needs of children and their families.

Therefore, the assessment of each case, the work plan with the specific objectives, monitoring and evaluation is done jointly by the parties involved.

All these organizations act with the premise that the children of today are the adults that will form the society of tomorrow, so that attention to childhood is crucial to achieve their well-being, but also to build a more just, equitable society and cohesive.

In addition to Murcia, the project is carried out in the main Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Malaga, Palma, Seville, Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Zaragoza and Valencia, among others.

The program is expanding its scope of action to more areas and / or disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the Spanish territory.
