20 years recycling glass containers

The origins of the recycling of glass containers date back to the 80s with the arrival of the first containers in Madrid and Barcelona in 1982. After the approval of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Law in 1997 and the start of operations in 1998, Ecovidrio became the managing entity of a recycling model that guarantees a public, professional service and to which all citizens have access.

The recycling of glass containers is a fundamental element to contribute to sustainable development in accordance with the principles of circular economy.

During the last two decades the recycling rate of glass containers has experienced an exponential growth going from 31.3% in 2000 to 73% in 2017, a rate estimated by Ecovidrio according to the current calculation method.

In these 20 years of public-private collaboration, the kilogram per inhabitant of packaging waste collected in Spain has increased by 156%, going from about 6.6 kilograms per person in 1998 to almost 17 kilograms with which we have in the present.

The commitment to collaboration with the hospitality industry has allowed that in these 20 years 61% of the establishments of our country collaborate with Ecovidrio in training actions to promote the recycling of glass containers between the hotel trade.

Ecovidrio is the non-profit organization in charge of the management of the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain.
