Environment invests more than 100,000 euros in improving the air quality network in Sewer (10/11/2018)

The other elements that are monitored with this station, such as nitrogen dioxide, benzene, toluene or xylene, remain below the legal limits or recommended for more than a decade

The Ministry of Employment, Universities, Business and Environment has allocated a total of 107,000 euros to improve and modernize the sewer air quality measuring station.

In particular, the installation of a meteorological tower has been carried out and a benzene, toluene and xylene analyzer has been acquired;

a device for recording, storing and transmitting data (data logger);

a nitrogen oxide particle analyzer (NOx);

an atmospheric monitoring cabin and an ozone analyzer.

The levels of quality of the air that this station controls maintain a progressive improvement in the last years, without having registered any exceeding of the ozone warning and information threshold values since 2012. In terms of the ozone objective value of protection for health (average three-year value), it has not been exceeded since the 2014-2016 triennium.

As for the other elements that are monitored and controlled in this measuring station, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), PM10 particles, nitrogen oxide (NOx), benzene, toluene and xylene, have been maintained for ten years below the limits set by European regulations or recommended by the World Health Organization.

The general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo, stressed that this effort to improve air quality includes, in addition to the modernization of surveillance and control systems, "a boost to coordination and cooperation with both the different administrations as well as with movements and social and neighborhood associations and business organizations, with whom we maintain regular communication. "

The Air Quality Improvement Plan "is proving its usefulness as a monitoring and prediction tool, and in that objective we have to go hand in hand with the municipalities, which are responsible for road traffic, citizens, since the greatest Part of the air pollution comes from the emissions of vehicles or those companies or business sectors potentially more polluting, "said Antonio Luengo.

In the case of Alcantarilla, where some companies in the chemical sector are concentrated, a hyperspectral measurement study and a study of atmospheric pollution were carried out in 2014 through the air quality forecasting and diagnosis system prepared by the University of Murcia.

These investigations served as a basis for the measures included in the Integrated Environmental Authorizations granted to these industries and that include the obligation that these companies carry out the studies and measurements of those specific elements that they emit and that may be potentially contaminating. as to put in place the corresponding measures of control and reduction of these emissions.
