Public Health confirms the absence of diseases that are caused by pollution episodes in Sewell (24/10/2014)

Sewer Mayor has convened today in the Commission Monitoring Air Quality for next Wednesday and announce the contents of the report of Public Health

As a result of the many efforts undertaken by the Mayor Sewell and the Directorate General of Public Health of the Region of Murcia, with the help also of the Directorate General for the Environment, have culminated in the completion of a comprehensive report on the potential impact of air quality on the health of the inhabitants of Sewell, New Javalí Sangonera Dry and compared with other nearby municipalities (Murcia, Molina de Segura and Las Torres de Cotillas).

This report was carried out after the first action taken at the request of Mayor Sewell in July 2010, where as, initially, technical services of Health concluded that a different additional study "was not necessary to established in epidemiological health "monitoring.

From the new episodes of ill occurring odors in September 2013, it reiterates again the Directorate General of Health, the desirability of re further studies that lead us to know the impact that such events might have on health of the citizens of our town.

These incidents were reported also revealed both the City and the regional administration, citizen complaints and the Clean Air Platform itself.

As a result of all requests, including a later plenary of the Corporation, the Directorate General of Health related studies are initiated, with the aim of improving information about environmental risks and their impact on health population.

"With the available information, including studies on air quality provided by the mayor, has not revealed the presence of specific pollutants at sufficient concentrations and for the time necessary to associate certain pathologies and therefore justify performing specific epidemiological studies to measure the potential impact on the health of the residents of the areas affected by pollution ", as we manifest in its overall public health director, Francisco José García Ruiz.

From the data provided by the above study, the following conclusions:

Based on the episodes recorded in the Primary Care centers during the study period (2009-2013), Gutters is one of the basic health zones I Area including episodes associated with less respiratory conditions seen in primary care, still below most nearby municipalities.

Similarly, the incidence of cancer in the town of Sewell, New and Sangonera Javalí Seca during the years studied, shows no difference in cancer incidence, compared to the other municipalities around them and not with the regional average for none of the tumor, except the lowest risk for all malignant tumors in men together Sewer compared with all surrounding municipalities locations.

Regarding the overall mortality rate Township Sewer available in the last period (2009-2012) shows no difference with the regional average.

The causes of death that have shown a significant excess in Sewell (liver cirrhosis in men, ovarian cancer, senile and presenile mental illness and cerebrovascular disease in women) are associated more with age, lifestyle and the aging population which air pollution.

The report prepared by different specialists in Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Statistics at the request of the Director General of Public Health and Addictions, makes extensive tour of all the most important aspects that can affect the health of citizens, giving priority to the related with the possible air quality and odor episodes.

After the main episodes of strong odors occurring in our town between summer 2013 and April 2014 by the Department of Environment, through the Planning and Environmental Assessment, after analyzing the different studies and the ensure the maximum that the absence of health risks is a demonstrable fact, requested report by the Department of Epidemiology for the period June 2013- April 2014.

The report prepared by the Environmental Health Service concludes that according to measurements taken at the sampling points, there is no component or element they have passed the threshold of the limit values allowed and which are recognized by the World Organization Health and assumable to pose no risk to humans.

Toluene

Notable among toluene controlled items, as some of the highest peaks of the values have been the subject of political controversy in some full of the Corporation.

However, the report says, because it recognizes that in no case has come to exceed the established thresholds.

Nevertheless, the report clearly states that carcinogenesis from exposure to toluene, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer has evaluated this point, indicating that there is insufficient evidence in humans, so it is considered that Toluene is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity in humans.

On the other hand, the United States EPA has not classified toluene as to carcinogenicity, because no significant human data.

It is noteworthy that the episodes related to different respiratory conditions obtained from records computerized medical records in the Region of Murcia between 2009 and 2013 were studied, it appears that among all basic health areas including, Sewer has lower frequency episodes over the years studied.

Moreover, the comparison between Sewer and basic areas closer to this health (La Nora and Sangonera Dry) for those basic areas farther from the chemical pole Sewer (El Palmar, and Sangonera Nonduermas Green), we note that the first exhibit similar and in many cases lower frequencies with respect to the latter.

To publicize the results of the report, the mayor has called for next Wednesday the Commission Monitoring Air Quality in Sewell.
