The planting of more than 10,000 trees will turn Alcantarilla into an urban forest (11/11/2019)

Nine companies and entities have already been added, and 142,000 square meters of land are available for planting

The planting of more than 10,000 trees will turn the municipality of Alcantarilla into an urban forest.

The Kiri Urban Forest City Council project includes the planting of trees, both native and other species, in disused urban plots in order to expand the green mass of the municipality, dampen the effects of climate change, purify the air and improve the relationship of Citizens with nature.

The mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaquín Buendía, announced that "we already have 142,000 square meters of areas and lots for planting trees and continue working to obtain more spaces and that Alcantarilla is a more sustainable and greener city."

Buendía said that "the goal is to move from the current 14,300 trees that the municipality has to more than 25,000"

Citizens who want can transfer their disused land to the City Council to clean it and plant trees.

The owner may dispose of the plot at any time.

In addition, this initiative has public-private collaboration and the involvement of companies, institutions and society in general for planting and caring for trees.

They have already joined the Hidrogea, Ferrovial, Actua, Lisanplast, Fampama project, the Board of Brotherhoods and Passionary Guilds of Alcantarilla, the Eusebio Martínez Special Education College, the Sacred Heart of Jesus College and the Friends of the Huerta Museum Association .

Any company, institution and citizen who wishes may participate in this initiative taking care of the trees and helping to maintain urban forests in optimal conditions.

The mayor stressed that "among the priority issues of the municipality is the environment, environmental quality, sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Woodland plantation is an effective weapon to combat climate change, generates shade and it cools the temperature, avoids the heat island effect that cities suffer, is a CO2 sink and encourages the emission of oxygen. "

Kiri Urban Forest also foresees the increase of trees in areas where there are already parks, gardens and squares.

The philosophy of the project is to glimpse the city as an ecosystem, creating a network of urban forests throughout the municipality.

Tree planting protects the soil from the risk of erosion and flooding, reducing the net balance of emissions and air pollutants, reusing urban plots, involving citizens and businesses, creating a volunteer network around urban forests, the promotion of diversity and landscape in urban lands, and improve the conservation of urban populations.

Kiri, the tree of life

To generate these urban forests, the tree species Paulownia tormentosa, known as "tree of life", "empress tree" or "Kiri" has been selected.

This species is ideal for urban plantations because its deep roots save soil erosion, and it is resistant to fire and cold.

Its large leaves, rich in nitrogen, once they decompose enrich the soil.

This species absorbs ten times more carbon dioxide than any other tree and can be used as a biomass generator.

In addition, the Kiri has the fastest growth on the planet, and in eight years it reaches the size of a 40-year-old oak.
